Apple has officially released iOS 27, and this year’s update is about more than a fresh look or a handful of small changes. The biggest shift is happening behind the scenes, where Apple is putting its next generation of Apple Intelligence directly into everyday iPhone tasks.
The headline feature is the new Siri AI, which is finally moving Siri toward a more conversational assistant that can understand personal context, see what’s on your screen and take actions across apps. Apple is rolling it out as a beta in English, with more languages scheduled to follow in October.
But Siri isn’t the only reason to pay attention to iOS 27. Apple has also added new customization options, smarter Home features, improvements to Maps and Safari, new parental controls and several smaller changes that make the iPhone feel more flexible.
iOS 27 Release Date
Apple released iOS 27 on September 14, 2026 as a free software update for compatible iPhones. The update arrived alongside iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27 and Apple’s other major software releases.
To install it, open:
Settings → General → Software Update
Apple says features can vary depending on the iPhone model, region, language and carrier.
Siri AI Is the Biggest Change
The most talked-about part of iOS 27 is clearly Siri AI.
This isn’t simply the old Siri with a few extra commands. Apple describes Siri AI as an entirely new version of its assistant, built around personal context, onscreen awareness and broader knowledge.
For example, Siri can understand information currently displayed on your iPhone and use context from your apps to help find something you need. Apple also has a dedicated Siri AI app where conversations can be continued later.
There’s also Write with Siri, which can help draft text or provide feedback on something you’ve already written.
Siri AI is rolling out in beta in English first. Apple says French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish support is coming in October. Availability also varies by region.
Apple Intelligence Gets More Useful
iOS 27 expands Apple Intelligence beyond a few isolated AI tools.
Apple is integrating intelligence into everyday experiences such as writing, reminders, Calendar, Safari, Photos and other system features.
For example, users can describe a reminder or calendar event in natural language instead of manually filling in every field. Apple Intelligence can also summarize emails, conversations, audio recordings and phone calls.
Apple is also bringing AI-powered features to the Home app, including smarter activity notifications, descriptions of HomeKit Secure Video footage and AI-powered video search. Compatible HomeKit Secure Video cameras can also support 4K streaming and recording.
A More Customizable iPhone Interface
iOS 27 continues Apple’s Liquid Glass design direction while giving users more control over how parts of the interface look.
One notable addition is an opacity slider, allowing users to adjust the appearance of Liquid Glass elements.
Apple has also updated several app icons and added support for larger widgets. Lock Screen customization gets more flexibility as well, including the ability to resize the time display.
These aren’t revolutionary changes, but they make the software feel more personal.
Safari Gets Smarter

Safari also gets a few useful AI-focused additions.
Users can organize tabs automatically by topic, create custom extensions and use a new Notify Me feature to receive alerts when a webpage changes, such as when a product price drops or an item comes back in stock.
For people who keep dozens of browser tabs open, automatic organization could end up being one of those small features that becomes surprisingly useful.
Visual Intelligence Gets More Powerful
iOS 27 expands the ways the iPhone can understand what’s in front of you.
With Siri AI and Visual Intelligence, users can point the camera at something, ask questions about it, search for information or trigger certain actions.
Apple gives examples such as recognizing information from a check and helping users split a bill through Apple Cash, or quickly importing information from a card into Apple Wallet.
This is where Apple’s AI strategy starts to feel less like a separate chatbot and more like something built into the phone itself.
Maps Gets an AI Upgrade
Apple Maps is also getting a visual boost.
The new Enhanced Flyover combines aerial imagery with Visual Intelligence models to produce more detailed views, including architectural features and even the shapes of individual trees.
It is a more visual approach to Maps rather than simply adding another navigation feature.
Privacy Still Plays a Major Role
Apple continues to make privacy a central part of its AI strategy.
The company says Siri AI uses on-device technologies, including the Spotlight index and App Toolbox, to access relevant information while keeping users in control of their data.
At the same time, some Apple Intelligence features rely on server-side models. Apple says those features can have daily usage limits, depending on the feature, request complexity, system demand and other factors.
So iOS 27’s AI isn’t completely dependent on local processing.
iOS 27 Supported iPhones
One of the better parts of iOS 27 is that Apple hasn’t dropped support for the iPhone 11 generation.
According to Apple’s compatibility list, iOS 27 supports:
- iPhone 11, 11 Pro and 11 Pro Max
- iPhone 12 series
- iPhone 13 series
- iPhone 14 series
- iPhone 15 series
- iPhone 16 series
- iPhone 17 series
- iPhone Air
- iPhone 17e
- iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
- iPhone Duo
- iPhone SE (2nd generation and later)
Apple notes that individual features can vary by model, region, language and carrier.
Which iPhones Get the New Apple Intelligence Features?
This is where the compatibility story becomes more complicated.
An iPhone can run iOS 27 without supporting every Apple Intelligence feature.
Apple says Apple Intelligence on iOS 27 is available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max and iPhone 16 models or later, along with the newer compatible models.
That means older iPhones such as the iPhone 11, 12, 13 and 14 can receive iOS 27, but they won’t get the full Apple Intelligence experience.
iOS 27 for US Users

For users in the United States, the biggest immediate change is Siri AI.
The initial Siri AI beta is available in English, making the US one of the markets where Apple’s new AI assistant can be experienced right away. Apple is also expanding Siri AI to additional languages in October.
Some Apple Intelligence features also have usage limits because they depend on Apple’s server-based models. Apple says expanded access to certain features will be available for a fee in the future.
Is iOS 27 a Big Update?
On paper, iOS 27 looks like another annual software update. In practice, Siri AI makes it more significant.
The visual changes are relatively easy to notice, but the bigger story is how Apple is trying to make AI part of normal iPhone usage.
Instead of opening a separate AI chatbot every time you need help, Apple wants Siri to understand what’s happening on your screen, use information from your apps and perform actions for you.
That approach could become much more important as Apple expands Siri AI beyond its initial beta.
For now, though, iOS 27 is best viewed as the beginning of Apple’s next phase of AI-powered iPhone software rather than the finished version of it.
